Before Expedia, Dara was also the CFO of IAC (InterActiveCorp), a holding company in the USA, for 7 years. His long history in tech made him a preferable choice for running Uber. As of 2020, his net worth is $450 million.
From Iran to the USA
Dara was born into an Iranian wealthy family who was the founders of a major conglomerate, Alborz Investment Company. The company was seized during the Iranian revolution in 1979 and his family was forced to leave the country to move to the US. Dara was only nine years old then. They lived in Tarrytown, New York.
His parents Lili and Asghar Khosrowshahi have three sons. He is the youngest of the three siblings. His family lived with an uncle of his in Tarrytown. They thought it was a temporary solution and they would be able to go back to Iran if the revolution failed. But destiny had something else planned.
Dara had to stay away from his father for 6 years when he was 13 as his father went back to Iran to look after Dara’s grandfather and wasn’t allowed to leave the country. His mother Lili had to raise her children alone for those years without the support of his father.
Dara Khosrowshahi started attending an Ivy League private prep school along with his cousins and graduated from there in 1987. He graduated from Brown University in 1991 with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering.
Personal Life of Khosrowshahi
Dara Khosrowshahi has four children, a daughter, and a son from his first marriage. And twin sons from his second marriage with Sydney Shapiro who is an actress. He married Sydney on December 12, 2012 (12/12/12). They were married in Las Vegas where his wife wore a T-shirt of a heavy metal band during their wedding. Dara considers himself to be lucky to have a wife that reflects and compliments his traits in every way.
Dara is not the only tech genius in his family. His uncle Hassan Khosrowshahi is a renowned businessman, investor, and philanthropist who fled to Canada during the revolution. Also, his brother Kaveh Khosrowshahi is the managing director of Allen & Co.
His brother Mehrad Khosrowshahi is a managing partner of the boutique consulting firm Confida Inc, and his cousin Amir Khosrowshahi is at Intel. His twin cousins Ali and Hadi Partovi are hotshot investors. Farzad Khosrowshahi, another one of Dara’s cousins, is the creator of Google Sheets.
Dara’s Point of View
Having experienced the hardships of a revolution at the age of 9, Dara sympathizes with refugees who are in crisis all around the world. He donated to several funds over the years, showing his support. He got into a little controversy over a pedestrian being killed by one of Uber’s self-driving cars in 2018.
Dara and his dislike of President Donald Trump’s immigration policy is no secret. He believes Trump’s decision to ban immigrants, especially of Muslim nations to be a mistake. He often expresses his opinion against the president via social media.
Dara wishes to model Uber after Amazon. Even though Amazon started as an online book retailer, it soon expanded from that and is now one of the biggest tech companies in the world. Uber started as a ride-hailing app. Now it’s also working as a food and grocery delivery service. Dara wishes Uber to become more versatile and not just staying focused on a single field.
What Uber Saw In Him
Right after graduation, Dara joined Allen & Company (which is an investment bank) as an analyst in 1991. After 7 years in 1998, he went to work in the USA as senior vice president of strategic planning and then the president. He joined IAC later on as the CFO.
In 2005, Dara became the CEO of Expedia which was bought by IAC in 2001. Expedia tried to keep him with them until 2020 by giving him $90 million worth of stock as part of the deal. Dara broke the deal and joined Uber as CEO in 2017. His $90 million stock was more than $180 million by then. But that didn’t matter as Uber offered him $200 million for taking the CEO position.
He was not the first choice of the then Uber CEO and founder, Travis Kalanick. Kalanick favored Jeffrey Immelt, the former CEO of General Electric. But Dara’s previous experiences and his stability made him the perfect choice as Uber was still pretty unstable and scandal-ridden.
Finally, Uber still has a long way to go when it comes to expanding its business. But Dara Khosrowshahi believes that the new ventures he envisions for the company will create more earning opportunities for their associated drivers.
This will benefit the investors in return, making the company gain a larger fund. Dara overcame a lot of hardships since he was a boy. Hopefully, Uber will be able to reach new heights under the leadership of this talented and businessman.
