Childhood and Early Life

On 19 July 1953, Howard Schultz was born in Brooklyn, New York. He was the son of Elaine and Fred Schultz. His father was a US army soldier and later a truck driver. Howard had one sister and brother. He studied at Canarsie High School from where he received his graduation in 1971. He played football in high school to earn a scholarship in higher studies.

His college fees came from government loans and money earned from part-time jobs. Schulz was the first one to go to college within his family. In 1975, he achieved his baccalaureate in speech communication. He grew up in a poor family and lived in public housing in Brooklyn. He was raised as a Jewish.

In 1982, Schultz married Sheri Kersch and had two children. They live in Seattle’s Madison Park neighborhood. Their son Jordan Schultz is a sportswriter for The Huffington Post. Howard didn’t complete a Masters’ degree. He joined the Xerox Company after graduation to begin a career where he was a salesman. He immediately got a promotion to a sales representative for full-time. Later, he was a general manager for Hammarplast, a coffee maker in Sweden. He visited a shop that sold coffee-beans known as Starbucks Coffee Company while he went to Seattle.

He found their idea of coffee-making a fascinating one and was interested to work with the company, and later, gets recruited to be the marketing director. While he was on a tour to Milan, Italy, to buy items for Starbucks, Schultz observed the existence of coffee bars in every corner of the street. He got to know that these coffee places made excellent coffee and are also great meeting places for the public.

Encouraged from this, he requested the owners to offer old-style beverages to the people and form a café. But they refuse to turn their business into a restaurant and Schultz was forced to leave the company. He needed a huge sum of money to build his shop but was unable to manage it.

He was saved by a doctor named Gordon Bowker, the co-founder of Starbucks, who provided him the capital for investing in his business. Il Giornale was the first store that had enough cash to open in 1986. The shop sold ice cream and coffee, had a small seating area, and even played music for operas. Afterward, the initial management of Starbucks sold Schultz to their Starbucks distribution business.

From then on, Starbucks officially belonged to Schultz. He expanded the coffee shop business with dedication and effort to make many stores around the world. There were no shareholders of the business, so the control over the business remained as his belonging. He stepped down as Starbucks’ CEO, at one point, moving to the new position of the chief global strategist to help the company expand internationally.

Later, he rejoined before finally resigning from all the positions of the business. He was very focused on the growth and profits of his business and removed anything that hampered it. However, he kept account of all the profits and losses of the business. He ran a campaign for president later in his life. He also had a partnership with Arizona State University.

The huge amount of wealth in hand didn’t change the lifestyle of Schultz. He claims to be a regular person who had big ambitions in life. He had doubts about his success but he was very determined about his ambitions. This led to the enormous success of his venture. He is somber about the idea of hard work and persistence. The cause behind the successful venture was the smart idea that came to his mind of providing the people with a place to meet and enjoy their favorite beverage.

Schultz was interested in politics and thought about running for president. But he ruled out of this as he feared the re-election of Donald Trump. Schultz won prizes for his success and leadership. He also wrote a few books related to his business venture. At one point, he was also the owner of the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) Seattle SuperSonics.

Howard Schultz is a successful and happy man. He has a wonderful family of children and grandchildren. All of them have done notable works in their fields. He and his wife lived the American Dream and tried to help others do the same for themselves and their families, feeling it to be their responsibility. Even after leaving the company, he built with his hands; he keeps everything associated with it close at heart.

The Starbucks we know today originated from the small business strategy by Howard Schultz. Currently, Starbucks is a widely recognized place for coffee all over the world, for its unique coffee and other food items, and their remarkable service. Lack of support for the establishment of his business didn’t stop him. He started small, and with proper management, he created a mass growth of his business. Though he has left his ownership, the coffeeshop’s credit would always belong to him. Like an ideal child, he wanted to earn the pride of his parents.
